Diamonds & Gemstones

What are the 4 Cs?

Clarity, Colour, Carat Weight and Cut.

- WHAT IS DIAMOND CLARITY?

The clarity grade is based on any tiny natural identifiers found within a diamond.

Michael Arthur is very specific with diamonds he sets in his pieces and makes sure they are free from inclusions that are visible without magnification. We recommend these diamonds for the best performance and value for money.

The shape of a diamond can affect the importance of its clarity grade. While the facets of round and princess-cut diamond can hide certain imperfections, step-cut shapes – such as emerald and asscher-cuts – have large, open tables. If you are searching for a step-cut diamond, we suggest looking at those with clarity grades of VS2 or higher.

- WHAT IS DIAMOND COLOUR?

This grade refers to the pure white colour of a diamond, or its lack of color.

The less color within the diamond, the more rare and valuable it is likely to be. While D to F color grades are considered Colorless, an untrained eye could not easily spot color within G to I grades. If you are concerned about visible color and are considering platinum or white gold for the ring Michael Arthur recommends D-G to make sure there is no slight colour detected.

-WHAT IS DIAMOND CARAT WEIGHT?

Carat weight is a measure of a diamond’s weight, and a reflection of its size.

1 carat is equivalent to 200 milligrams. Because carat is a record of a diamond’s weight – not its size – two diamonds of slightly different sizes may have the same carat weight. A diamond’s size is also dependent on how evenly its weight is distributed, and the quality of its cut. Some diamonds are cut to maximize carat weight, resulting in less sparkle. A balance of quality in carat and cut is therefore recommended. Speak to Michael Arthur to discuss the ideal proportions of the diamond weight and shape you are looking at purchasing.

- WHAT IS DIAMOND CUT?

A quality cut grade allows a diamond to express its natural sparkle and beauty.

Cut refers to the quality of a diamond’s proportions, symmetry and also the shape of the diamond such as brilliant cut, princess cut etc.

These angles allow the diamond to capture light and reflect it, producing sparkle. If a diamond’s pavilion is too deep, for example, the center will be noticeably dark or if it is too shallow the diamond will leak light reducing the performance of the diamond.

If you want a truly brilliant diamond, consider those with cut grades of Excellent or Very good. Michael Arthur Diamonds only deal with diamonds with a cut grading of Very good or Excellent.

How do I know the diamond I purchase is authentic and true to the specs online?

Each diamond comes with a GIA report which contains a full scientific and unbiased assessment of your diamond’s 4Cs. GIA tests every diamond submitted to establish its authenticity as a diamond and whether it’s been subjected to treatments. GIA reports provide a full description of the diamond, including color, weight, measurements, and cutting style, and will disclose any known treatments.

What are GIA diamonds?

GIA diamond is a term you’ll find when engagement ring shopping – short for a diamond graded by GIA, the creator of the 4Cs and the independent, diamond authority. Learn more about GIA diamonds and why savvy shoppers rely on GIA here (link)

What is fluorescence in a diamond?

Fluorescence is the glow you sometimes see when an object emits visible light. Some diamonds fluoresce when they are exposed to ultraviolet (UV) rays from sources like the sun and fluorescent lamps. This can cause them to emit a bluish light or more rarely, a yellow or orangy light. Once the UV light source is removed, the diamond stops fluorescing. We work with diamonds that have Nil-Strong fluorescence and insure that there are no negative effects with diamonds that have fluorescence.

Are your diamonds conflict free?

Every piece of diamond jewellery we produce at Michael Arthur is certified and conflict-free. This means we purchase them from clean, legitimate sources we know and trust and who operate under the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme -hyperlink (https://www.kimberleyprocess.com/en/what-kp) and the System of Warranties.

This is serious behind-the-scenes business to ensure all diamonds Michael Arthur Diamonds provides you with are purchased under the highest ethical standards.

This international scheme was established and implemented by the United Nations in 2003 as an effort to eliminate the trade of conflict diamonds (also known as ‘blood’diamonds):

It outlines the regulations and all requirements that help prevent all sorts of illegal diamond trading.

It guarantees that any imported diamonds come with government-validated Kimberley Process certificates stating the diamonds are conflict-free.

It confirms all diamonds have been transported from the source in sealed containers that are tamper resistant.

The Kimberley Process members account for approximately 99% of the global production of rough diamonds.

-The System of Warranties

The System of Warranties is the diamond industry’s process to further guarantee that any diamonds that make their way to individual jewellers are conflict-free. When diamonds are imported into a country and are ready for trade are certified by companies such as GIA, HRD or DCLA who can guarantee that the stones are conflict free. Diamond dealers can provide warranty statements guaranteeing the loose diamonds, or the complete diamond jewellery, came from a legitimate source and are conflict-free.

In fact, all diamond traders and diamond manufacturers must keep copies of their invoices for the annual audits.
